This is the closest variety of Lavazza available in the US comparable to Il Mattino. Il Mattino is a 10 on Lavazza's 1-10 scale and only available in France, actually from France and not Italy. (Got hooked on it in France.) This Lavazza, the brick packs, put American grocery store brands, including Lavazza US-market 12 oz bags whole bean and ground, to shame. It is good and strong, and the only coffee I don't need to use the BOLD button on my Cuisinart with. Praise!
Despite being a dark roast and made from primarily Robusta beans, this coffee is surprisingly not as bitter as I was expecting. In fact, it's not too bitter at all, just nice and strong. Very chocolatey smell, but there is much more of a tobacco-y flavour than chocolatey, which is not necessarily bad, just unexpected. In any case, good coffee for the price.
Types of Coffee
-
Light Roast
See moreRoasted for the shortest amount of time, light roast beans retain a higher acidity, resulting in a bright, nuanced flavor with hints of fruit and floral notes. The body is lighter, with a subtle sweetness. Light roasts are preferred by those who appreciate the natural characteristics of the bean origin.
-
Medium Roast
See moreThis is the most popular roast level, striking a balance between acidity and bitterness. The beans develop a richer, fuller body with a smoother taste. Notes of caramel, chocolate, and nuttiness often emerge. Medium roast coffees are versatile and work well for a variety of brewing methods.
-
Dark Roast
See moreRoasted for the longest duration, dark roast beans are characterized by a bold, intense flavor with a lower acidity. The caramelization process creates a smoky, bittersweet taste with notes of dark chocolate and char. They have a heavier body and are often preferred by those who enjoy a stronger brew.
