Julius Meinl

Julius Meinl I

Vienna's coffee culture is world-renowned, and Julius Meinl is a name synonymous with its rich history. In the bustling streets of downtown in 1862, Julius Meinl I. laid the cornerstone of a legacy that would redefine the coffee experience. His modest shop offered an array of spices and teas - captivating the senses of passersby - and crucially, green coffee beans.

Fast-forward to 1877, and Julius Meinl I. pioneers a revolution in coffee roasting. His innovative process, free from the constraints of coal gases, transforms the coffee bean, liberating it from unwanted aftertastes while preserving its innate aroma, marking a pivotal moment in the history of coffee craftsmanship.

By 1912, the company had blossomed, establishing its headquarters in the heart of Vienna's 16th district. This strategic move laid the foundation for Julius Meinl's ascent as the premier coffee roaster of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and a titan in Central Europe's coffee and tea trade.

In 1924, the iconic Meinl logo, envisioned by graphic designer Joseph Binder, emerged, forever etching its mark on Meinl's rich tapestry. Over the decades, Julius Meinl continued to innovate and captivate, introducing legendary blends such as the Jubilaum coffee blend in 1962 and the esteemed Präsident coffee in 1980.

The turn of the millennium ushered in a new era of design and sustainability. In 2004, Matteo Thun breathed fresh life into the Julius Meinl logo, while 2008 saw the creation of the world's largest coffee house during the European Football Championship, a testament to Meinl's global presence and passion for coffee culture.
